International Congress on "Cetariae: Fish sauces and salted fish products in the western Mediterranean in Antiquity"

The International Congress on "CETARIAE: Fish sauces and salted fish products in the western Mediterranean in Antiquity" will be held in the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Cádiz, from 7 to 9 November 2005. The main objective of this Congress is to bring together specialists in the production and trade of "garum" and "salsamenta", in order to take stock of the lines of research undertaken and, in particular to present the principal findings of recent years on this topic. The geographic reference framework covers the western provinces of the Empire, and the chronological scope runs from the republican epoch to Late Antiquity.

There are three basic objectives centred specifically this updating:

  • To stimulate the presentation of archeological research carried out on this topic and related aspects in recent decades.
  • To produce a synthesis of current knowledge of the production centres of the western Mediterranean, in the light of the currently published information.
  • To put forward lines of action for the coming years.
